Have you ever wondered how 3D assets such as props, characters and vehicles get created for your favourite feature films, TV shows and video games? Are you interested in pursuing a creative career as a 3D artist but don’t know where to begin?

Knowing where to start can be a daunting and frustrating process. You may have looked at tons of online resources, bought a few tutorials and read all the industry standard books but you’re still looking for more. Rest assured you’re not alone. Learning how to create digital art and 3D assets takes time to master and no software program will do the job for you.

That’s why CG Spectrum has developed the Introduction to 3D Modeling course to help you build proper foundations and learn the most important principals of digital art and 3D asset creation so you can start off on the right foot. During this course, you will learn 3D modeling from the ground up from industry mentors who have worked at studios such as Pixar, Dreamworks and Weta Digital. We’ll teach you the everything from the foundations, software tools and all the short cuts we’ve learned over the years working at major studios around the world.

The Introduction to 3D Modeling course is designed to strengthen your foundation skills and provide a pathway to the Advanced 3D Modeling Diploma by mastering the basics of 3D modeling. First, you'll learn everything from navigating Maya, the industry standard software package and all the common tools that the pros use. Once you're comfortable with the technical stuff you'll move into 3D Modeling theory and applications. Students finish off by creating their own 3D character from scratch using the knowledge they've learned throughout the course.

INTRODUCTION TO 3D MODELING CURRICULUM

HARD SURFACE MODELLING WEEK 01 - 04

Starting out using Maya can seem like a daunting process. From its overwhelming interface to its enormous array of capabilities, knowing where to begin can seem near impossible. We will start by looking at the interface and begin learning how to navigate in a scene, create objects, and use the most important modeling tools then finish up by creating your very own 3D asset.

TEXTURING AND UV LAYOUT WEEK 05 - 08

Good 3D modeling is essential for creating great artwork, but texturing will really bring it to life. During this section of the course, we will dive into texture mapping and UV layout in order to add colour and depth to your 3D models using the Substance Painter software. Students will finish with a good understanding of the texturing process and have a fully textured 3D model to show off.

LOW POLY CHARACTER WEEK 09 - 12

During this section of the course, students will model a low polygon video game character, learn the fundamentals of good edge flow and continue a deeper look at modeling tools in general. By the end of this project, you will have completed an entire stylized character, and have a better understanding of character modeling techniques.

HIGH POLY CHARACTER WEEK 13 - 16

In the final weeks of the course, students will learn what it takes to model and texture a high-resolution 3D humanoid character. Using the base mesh created previously students will add more features to their model such as clothing, wrinkles and facial detail.

Start: Lessons / Video Content

  • Review the recorded lectures and supportive material
  • Review the assignment requirements
  • Begin researching and planning their week 
  • Start assignment 

Middle: Live Q&A Session / Feedback

  • Submit their first pass of work for the mentor’s video critique
  • Meet instructor online for a Q & A and critique session
  • Download and review recorded Q & A session and revise their work according to mentor feedback

End: Critique / Feedback

  • Submit their final pass of work for the week
  • Review additional recorded critique by their mentor working within their file
  • Review the following weeks recorded lectures and supportive material
